Venturing out on to the lake during winter ? Ice fishing ?
Remember the thicknesses below are merely guidelines for new clear solid ice and that many factors other than thickness can cause ice to be unsafe.

There is no such thing as 100 percent safe ice!
4" of new clear ice is the minimum thickness for travel on foot.
5" is minimum for snowmobiles and ATVs.
8"- 12" for cars or small trucks.

2 inches or less STAY OFF!

Check for known thin ice areas with a local resort or bait shop.
Test the thickness yourself using an ice chisel, ice auger or even a cordless 1/4 inch drill with a long bit.
Wear a life vest under your winter gear, or wear one of the new flotation snowmobile suits. And it's a good idea to carry a pair of ice picks that may be home made or purchased from most well stocked sporting goods stores that cater to winter anglers. It's amazing how difficult it can be to pull yourself back onto the surface of unbroken but wet and slippery ice while wearing a snowmobile suit weighted down with 60 lbs of water. The ice picks really help pulling yourself back onto solid ice.
CAUTION: Do NOT wear a flotation device when travelling across the ice in an enclosed vehicle!

What should you do if a companion falls through thin ice?

Keep calm and think out a solution.
Don't run up to the hole. You'll probably break through and then there will be two victims.
Use some item on shore to throw or extend to the victim to pull them out of the water such as jumper cables or skis, or push a boat ahead of you.
If you can't rescue the victim immediately, call 911. It's amazing how many people carry cellphones.
Get medical assistance for the victim. People who are subjected to cold water immersion but seem fine after being rescued can suffer a potentially fatal condition called "after drop" that may occur when cold blood that is pooled in the body's extremities starts to circulate again as the victim starts to re-warm.

What if YOU fall in?

Try not to panic. Instead, remain calm and turn toward the direction you came from. Place your hands and arms on the unbroken surface of the ice (here's where ice picks would come in handy.) Work forward on the ice by kicking your feet. If the ice breaks, maintain your position and slide forward again. Once you are laying on the ice, don't stand. Instead, roll away from the hole. That spreads out your weight until you are on solid ice. This sounds much easier than it is to do in reality.

Think !

Hi Jason, For starters you have the Maumee State Park on the eastside oft Maumee Bay. I would make sure you have a chart of the bay! The park is to starboard right after the Spoil Area, BUT DO NOT Change course at this spot as there are shoals all along, both sides of the Channel. If you have a GPS you can find the gaps between the shoals, These are rocky so go slowly when you are in the area. The best way is when coming to the Stationary Green Bouy half way out the channel, check your chart for the opening and sail a course that you have PREVIOUSLY charted and follow your compass course through the hazards.
West Sister Is. is East of the Lighthouse, the Tol. LH is another site, and the W.S. Island is uninhabaited and walking on the Island is forbidden. It is a Wild life Preserve.
Unless you want to make a 6 to 8 hour one way trip to Put In Bay, a course of 110 degrees from the Toledo Lighthouse will take you to the South Bass Island. I would make this a week end trip with overnight stays. Take $$$.

The Voyage not the Destination,
is Cherished by Sailors, Captjim

I am surprised the Ohio Dept of Natural Resources does not have a Ice Fishing course, like they do for Boating and Hunting.

How many know how to be safe or at least be safer on the Ice ?

Just some hints & suggestions for new fishermen or women anglers wanting to fish on the ice.

First NEVER wear waders out on the ice. Being able to walk on the top of the water, your not aware of how deep it is under your feet. IF breaking thru the ice, the first thing that will possibly happen is submerging in icy water over your head or to your shoulders. Thus allowing the cold water to enter over the top of your waders and filling the legs possibly to your waist. Trying to climb out with the added weight of the water is almost impossible.
Wear winter (lined) hiking ( ) boots. They will provide warmth, waterproofing and traction. Wear layered clothing, starting with these new athletic type under clothing. They stay close to the skin (keeping the cold water at least one layer away. Then the thermo's, a good snowmobile suit or heavy ski type clothing, usually light weight and water proof so they don't absorb water and add weight. Waterproof Carhart type clothing is also good. Any of the clothing types above will be appreciated out o the ice, even a slight breeze can chill to the bone (no trees to block the wind).
Think about wearing snowshoes. These spread out your weight on the ice. If your just wearing boots your entire weight is on the ball and heel of one foot when walking and a very small area (possibly less than 1 foot square) when standing.
Consider carrying one ladder of an aluminum extension ladder. A 20' extension ladder separated is a very light 10' safety item. If you were to fall thru, turning the ladder across the hole would spread out the weight of you trying to climb out. If some else falls thru, you can slide the ladder toward them, without getting close to the broken ice edge and allowing them a grab bar for you to pull them out.
Another thing to consider taking with you is a flashlight, flares or air horn. If you or someone else needs help, having the ability to signal to the shore or others will be very valuable.
Lots of people venture out on to the ice with trucks, cars, atv's and snowmobiles. Yes the ice gets that thick here on the lake to safely do that. BUT be warned breaking through the ice with a truck or car can and does trap individuals inside these vehicles. In 10, 20 or 30 plus feet of water your in a deadly situation.
ATV's and snowmobiles do spread the weight out more, but it is usually speed that gets a rider in to trouble. With the speed these can travel at, seeing cracks, open water or a snow drift that will launch you into the air is very difficult. Braking on ice is very hard and difficult to do in time to avoid these. Coming down after hitting a snow drift is very likely to crack the ice or even break through.
The Sheriff, Coast Guard or Township Rescue team will NOT recover any vehicle or equipment you take out onto the ice. If a crack opens up between where you are and the shoreline, say goodbye to it all.
Be SAFE !!
